What is your experience and interest in cultural inclusion within orthopaedics?: As a woman in orthopaedics, and a member of the LGBTQI+ community I am deeply invested in increasing cultural inclusion in orthopaedics. I have a wife and 4 year old daughter, I am currently pregnant with our second. I have two dogs and spend as much spare time outside as possible. I believe that mentoring is an integral part of making orthopaedics a more accessible and enjoyable career for all. I have had a series of excellent mentors across several states and hope for the same for all budding orthopods.

What is your experience and interest in cultural inclusion within orthopaedics?: The greater the inclusion and participation of peoples of different ethnicities the greater the likelihood of peace and harmony and exchange of knowledge is likely to be.

I have worked in Sri Lanka, the UK and now in Australia, and have been exposed to a wide range of cultures and ideas. I know personally how difficult it can be to be recognised and accepted.

The acceptance and encouragement of people from various ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds is imperative if we aim to improve the lives and livelihoods of all individuals.

What is your experience and interest in cultural inclusion within orthopaedics?: Diversity brings talent from multiple areas and backgrounds, which we may not have recognised. Inclusion for me is about finding ways to connect with our diverse orthopaedic membership and incorporating their strengths and ideas. I trained at a time where diversity and inclusion was joked about as the reason I was selected. I want to support other registrars and non trainees on their path through training and move us to a time where we won’t have to work towards diversity and inclusion because it would be normal.
