Are you the next AOA Dean of Education?

The AOA Board is calling for expressions of interest from medical educationalists to fill the currently vacant AOA dean of education role. The role of the AOA dean of education role was created to support the educational activities of AOA, particularly the AOA 21 project, and to provide education advice and guidance for the Federal Training Committee (FTC).

Working under the guidance of the FTC and the Chair of Education and Training, the Dean is also responsible for: 

  • Facilitating and assisting with implementation and review of the AOA 21 project 
  • Contributing towards ongoing quality improvement for the training program via monitoring and analysis of AOA 21 data
  • Promulgating nationally and internationally, through presentation and publication, the education development work done by AOA.  
  • Actively supporting and promoting the Education and Training Portfolio
  • Working with the CEO to exploring and facilitate alternate funding models of education projects and research, through grant, scholarship or government funding opportunities

As the inaugural AOA 21 cohort approaches the Transition to Practice stage of training, the initial implementation of AOA 21 nears completion. The new AOA Dean of Education will provide an invaluable contribution to the first major review of the AOA 21 Training Program and play a key role in shaping its evolution.

The role has a number of key relationships including:

  • Working under the direction of the AOA FTC and in close liaison with the AOA Chair of Education and Training and National Education Manager for education and training policy and design matters, and monitoring and evaluation activities
  • Reporting to the CEO for matters requiring administrative, governance, risk, strategic, legal and or financial support
  • Liaising with AOA Education and Training staff

Skill Set

Candidates for the Dean role should demonstrate:

  • Ability and previous experience with research activities
  • Experience working with committees 
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage positively with a wide range of stakeholders 
  • Ability and previous experience with government and non-government health and education stakeholders
  • Understanding of surgical education processes and regulations

The Dean may also hold higher qualification in orthopaedic surgery and education, preferably in surgical education.

AOA Fellows are invited to pass this information on to suitable candidates who may not be orthopaedic surgeons.


Time Commitment

The AOA Dean of Education role is a 0.3 FTE paid position.

The Dean is a full voting member of the Federal Training Committee, which meets face to face four times per year and by Zoom as necessary.

The role includes provision for some travel with the intention that the Dean will present AOA education materials at a minimum of one international and one national surgical education conference per year.
