Purpose
AOA recognises that life circumstances and career transitions can affect an individual’s ability to meet standard financial obligations. To support members during these times, AOA may offer fee relief in the forms of flexible membership and training fee options. Any fee relief will be subject to an individual review and consideration of the members specific circumstances.
Who can apply
The Member Fee Relief Policy covers the following financial categories of the AOA membership:
You may be eligible to apply if you are experiencing:
- Significant life events: eg parental leave, bereavement, major illness, or caregiving responsibilities
- Career transitions: eg reduced working hours, unemployment
- Unexpected financial hardship: eg loss of income, emergency expenses, natural disaster impacts
- First year fellow: an orthopaedic surgeon in their first year as a fellow of AOA.
- Early career fellowships on international fellowship: first-year fellows or early career fellows participating in an international fellowship.
What relief covers
Fee relief may include:
- Reduction or waiver of annual membership fees
- Flexible payment schedules or instalments
- Temporary suspension of membership or training fees during defined periods.
How to apply
- Read the Member Fee Relief Policy: ensure you understand the eligibility criteria and relief options available.
- Complete the Application Form: available via the member portal or by contacting susie.obeid@aoa.org.au
- Provide supporting information: a brief outline of your circumstances and any relevant documentation (kept confidential).
- Submit application: applications are assessed on a rolling basis unless otherwise specified.
Assessment process
- Applications are reviewed confidentially by the Fee Relief Review Group with recommendations proposed to the AOA treasurer.
- Decisions are based on the circumstances provided, policy guidelines, and available resources.
- You will be notified in writing within 20 business days of submission.
Key considerations
- Financial relief is temporary.
- Members are encouraged to reapply if circumstances continue.
- The reduced membership rate for first-year fellows and early career fellows on international fellowships can only be used once.
- Trainees on an interruption of training or on part-time training will automatically have their training and membership fees adjusted and do not need to complete an application form.
- All information provided is handled in strict confidence.
