Data services

Bespoke industry data, analytical projects, and evidence generation

Bespoke industry data and analytics

CTAU provides bespoke data services for industry — coordinating data requests, analytical projects, and tailored outputs through the Centre for Data & Medical Statistics (CDMS).

Industry data requests and analytical projects are managed through CTAU's structured delivery model. CTAU coordinates the request, and CDMS delivers data management and statistical analysis, producing publications and evidence-generation support.

    Industry data requests

  • Tailored analytical outputs from registry data
  • Industry-specific reporting and evidence generation
  • Managed through formal request triage and allocation.

    Analytical projects

  • Data management delivered by CDMS
  • Statistical analysis and interpretation
  • Publications and evidence-generation support.

    AIRS

  • Automated industry data reporting
  • Streamlined data delivery for approved requests.

Three separate units – defined interfaces

Data governance is maintained through clear separation of accountability:

UnitPrimary responsibilityRole
AOANJRR Registry dataManages the National Joint Replacement Registry, the clinical outcomes data that underpins all registry-enabled research.
CTAU Study deliveryCoordinates trials, industry studies and analytical projects from proposal through to publication.
CDMS Data & statisticsDelivers data management, statistical analysis and analytical outputs commissioned by CTAU.

Separate accountability

Each unit maintains separate accountability for its domain. This separation ensures that data governance, study delivery, and statistical analysis are independently managed – providing transparency and integrity across all research activity.

Data governance and protection

CTAU maintains strict data governance policies across all data-related activities:

De‑identification

All released data is de‑identified. Re‑identification or recombination of datasets is prohibited.

Surgeon Identifiability

Risk of surgeon identification is actively managed through governance processes and strict controls.

Data Security

Data is stored securely with restricted access, retention requirements and deletion protocols.

AIHW Linkage

Linked-data projects operate under policies governing linkage, release and onward disclosure.

Legal Oversight

Data-sharing arrangements undergo appropriate review and approval before information is released.

Industry Partner Disclosures

Industry users of AOA data must meet disclosure, security and data management requirements.

Data request process

All data requests follow a single intake point with central request registration and formal approval pathway:

1

Submit request

Single intake point – all requests registered centrally.

→
2

Triage

Request classified: research, commercial, or analytical project.

→
3

Approval

Feasibility, governance, and legal review with escalation triggers.

→
4

Delivery

CDMS delivers data management and statistical analysis.

CTAU vs AOANJRR triage

Some data requests may be more appropriate for AOANJRR. The triage process determines whether a request is handled by CTAU (study delivery and analytical projects) or AOANJRR (registry data requests), ensuring no duplication and clear ownership.

Funding

Industry data services and analytical projects are funded through commercial agreements, while registry data activities may be supported through:

AIRS Industry data requests NHMRC MRFF External grants
