CTAU coordinates a diverse portfolio of clinical trials and studies across investigator-led, industry-funded, and analytical streams. Below is the current portfolio organised by status.

Portfolio overview

CTAU manages studies across three categories: Surgeon-initiated and grant-funded; Industry-funded; and Distinct studies. Each carries different governance and funding obligations within a single coordinated unit.

Current trials – surgeon-initiated, grant-funded

DISTINCT

Recruiting

Full Title

Dual Mobility versus standard THA in femoral neck fractures — a registry nested cluster-randomised trial

Primary Aim

To compare the effectiveness of dual mobility cups (DMC) to conventional total hip arthroplasty (THA) for femoral neck fracture in reducing the risk of hip dislocation in the first post-operative year.

Scale

52 sites, recruited over 2000 patients. Data finalised, paper submitted.

Robotic Assisted Surgery and Kinematic ALignment in TKA

Study Design

2×2 factorial study — individually randomised.

Primary Aim

To compare the individual and combined effectiveness of robotic-assisted and kinematic alignment in total knee arthroplasty compared to computer-assisted surgery and mechanical alignment respectively.

Scale

15 surgeons, 300 patients. Published in Bone & Joint Journal.

Recruiting

Full Title

Reverse or Anatomical (replacement) for Painful Shoulder Osteoarthritis: Differences between Interventions

Primary Aim

To find the best type of joint replacement for the treatment of painful OA of the shoulder by investigating if reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSR) is superior to anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (aTSR) at improving shoulder pain and function.

Notes

Collaborative trial with the UK. Principal Investigator: Prof Richard Page.

EPIK

Active

Clinical question

Can tailored care improve persistent pain three months after knee replacement?

Intervention/approach

Tailored multidisciplinary program compared with usual care.

Title

Preventing infection after hip and knee replacement

Clinical question

Can dilute povidone-iodine lavage reduce surgical site infection within 90 days?

Intervention / Approach

Dilute povidone-iodine lavage vs saline lavage. Registry-nested, hospital-randomised crossover trial. Primary elective hip or knee replacement for osteoarthritis.

Investigators

Paul Smith (Principal Investigator). Co-investigators: Richard de Steiger, Chris Vertullo, Ian Harris, Michael McAuliffe, Chris Wall, David Dewar, Andrew Fraval, Janney Wale, Catherine McDougall, Alicia Norman, Durga Bastiras and Sophie Corfield.

Title

Severe Knee Injury Pathways Platform for Youth

The problem

Young people with serious knee ligament injuries have variable treatments and limited nationally linked longitudinal outcome data.

The Approach

Establish a national knee injury registry/platform capturing surgery, treatment pathways, re-injury and patient-reported outcomes; enabling future registry-based research.

Investigators

Christopher Vertullo (Principal Investigator). Co-investigators: Sheanna Maine, Francois Tudor, Michael McAuliffe.

Status

Pilot will commence once new IT Platform is active and stable.

Sponsor

RR Medical

The Problem

Hip dislocation remains a persistent and unsolved problem.

The Approach

Examine the clinical outcomes of a novel constrained dual mobility acetabular cup. Aim to recruit 400 patients. Currently in recruitment.
