Recent claims from the private health industry that Australian surgeons are not acting in the interests of patients in choosing medical devices are contrary to the principles and values defined in the AOA Ethical Framework for Australian Orthopaedic Association members.

AOA President Dr Lawrie Malisano said, “AOA Members act in the best interests of their patients and select devices based upon clinical need and optimal clinical outcomes. In consultation with their patients, surgeons are the only ones responsible for choosing the most appropriate medical device.

“If an AOA member is proven to not act in the patient’s best interest, which is in a manner contrary to the principles of AOA’s ethical framework, a process of review and consideration of an appropriate sanction is instigated.

“AOA supports this international standard and will continue to support and encourage surgeons in this regard,” added Dr Malisano.
