Holidaying school-children from Melbourne’s south-east are expected to be amongst the first to view an exhibition showing how more than 14,500 orthopaedic surgical procedures are performed annually across Epworth hospital sites.

The display is part of the Australian Orthopaedic Association’s travelling exhibition, showcasing 80 years of orthopaedics in this country.

The travelling exhibition is free and can be viewed at Epworth Richmond (89 Bridge Rd) from April 4-18 at three locations; the Ground Floor adjacent to the café, Main Reception on Level 2, and in the Epworth Centre reception via 32 Erin St, Richmond.

Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) President Dr Ian Incoll said today “we are pleased to welcome our travelling orthopaedic exhibition and can think of no better place than Epworth HealthCare, Richmond”.
The exhibition includes information on sports injury prevention, the evolution of joint replacement, developments in the treatment of fractures and innovations including the use of 3D printing, robotics, computer navigation and customising implants during surgery.

Epworth Victor Smorgon Chair of Surgery Richard De Steiger said orthopaedic surgery had been a constantly evolving area of medicine.

“In my 25 years of surgery there have been major advances in prostheses, surgical techniques, equipment and imaging. This has meant we can provide reliable life-changing procedures for our patients.” Professor de Steiger said.

Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, musculoskeletal trauma and congenital disorders.

“The specialty of orthopaedics keep our children in the game, puts the bounce back in the knees and hips of our elderly and keeps all of Australia moving with more than 1.1 million joint replacement procedures undertaken throughout Australia’s hospital network since 1999,” Dr Incoll said.

“The exhibition is designed to educate the community about the hundreds of orthopaedic procedures performed in more than 300 Australian hospitals every day.”
