Professional Standards and Research

Professional Standards

One of AOA’s key roles is as the medium for important ongoing conversations between its constituent members and subspecialties. Our focus on Professional Standards represents our commitment to facilitating a constructive conversation about professional behaviour and ethical conduct aimed at developing benchmark standards of practice. These efforts have been championed by members of AOA’s presidential line, who are passionate about effective modern leadership providing a well-informed and contemporary understanding of ethics and professionalism.

Professional Standards and Research is a core strategy in AOA's Strategic Plan 2016–2018

We aim to facilitate a community of musculoskeletal research. Many AOA members are heavily involved in research – indeed, many of the most prominent Australian researchers in musculoskeletal disorders and conditions are AOA members – but the Association can provide support to these members by helping connect them with each other to enable collaborative and interdisciplinary projects. These efforts have begun with the ongoing cataloguing of research being carried out across the country, displayed in our Research Map.

Continuing Professional Development

AOA is committed to continual learning as an integral part of surgical practice. As part of our current strategic plan, we’re undertaking a critical evaluation and enhancement of our CPD program to reflect our belief that, rather than just a regulatory burden, CPD should be seen as a useful guide to maintaining and improving practice, keeping a current but critical eye on the latest research, and reviewing and evaluating data on personal performance. We’re also more closely integrating CPD with the AOANJRR by increasing the benefit of participating in the Registry, and of review and peer discussion of personal results.
